"Saving Lives Through Patient Support and Advocacy." The diagnosis of cancer is such a life changing event for the patient and loved ones. Not only do they have to battle this terrible disease and all of its side effects, but they also struggle with keeping a brave face during this struggle. This is true for both the patient and the family member or friend. For this reason, CCNetwork also offers support for the family/friends of colorectal cancer patients. The needs are clearly different, the journey is different. And both need to feel free to express themselves without worrying about the effect their words might have. Free to share their innermost fears with others who are traveling that same road, or perhaps have already done so. We are working with a variety of different organizations to increase awareness of colorectal cancer, and research to help stamp it out.

A message from St. Louis Cardinals right-fielder, Eric Davis: "I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer on June 17, 1997. My fight against the disease was tough, but with the help of my family and friends, thousands of fans and countless colorectal survivors, my burden became lighter. My treatment has been successful, but I could not have done it alone, which is why I am inspired to help others in their struggles and provide hope for those who continue the good fight. That is why I established the Eric Davis Foundation. I want to raise awareness and fund research to help improve prevention and screening techniques, and find new treatments for colorectal cancer."

Coalition of National Cancer Cooperative Groups
http://www.ca-coalition.org
2115 South St.Third Floor
Philadelphia, PA 19146
1-215-893-6436
The Coalition of National Cancer Cooperative Groups, Inc., was formed in November 1997 by the foundations of six of Cancer Cooperative Groups that are funded primarily by the National Cancer Institute. A cooperative group is a large network of researchers, physicians, and health care professionals at public and private institutions across the country that as members of the group can participate in cancer clinical trials. In cancer research, a clinical trial is a study designed to answer scientific questions. Advances in cancer treatment have occurred largely because of the knowledge gained in large clinical trials that test new and better ways to treat cancer patients. Some clinical trials test new treatments, investigate new ways of preventing cancer, screen patients for earlier diagnoses, and monitor the quality of life and/or psychological impact of cancer while others detect cancer in its earliest stages. Over the last 25 years, in particular, cooperative group studies have been responsible for many of the major discoveries in cancer therapies. No other cancer research organization in the world has the experience and accomplishment of the Cooperative Groups. With the Cooperative Groups making up a significant part of our membership, the Coalition will help maintain this leadership in cancer discovery.
